Murray Clarke

Murray Clarke (b.1992, UK) creates hyper-realistic expressions of tissue surfaces through a painstaking process of close-up photography. His work is like a simulacrum, stripped of the warmth and comforting smell of the real thing — a replica not endowed with the actual character of the original — suggesting an emptiness not present in the real thing. The automatic reaction inspired by this substantial reproduction of the surface induces a sense of calm and reflective appreciation, which, when translated through the artist's psychology and subjectivity, both creates a gap and engenders a sense of mystery from which the significance of reality is absent.
