CURB.

Looking ahead toward the new year with the onset of 2022, CURB. is an exhibition that takes stock of the natural environments that constitute our home planet, and also of ourselves, living within them.

In the midst of new and hopeful perspectives on the imminent end of our current pandemic, many of us are preparing to rejoin the world in earnest. During humanity’s brief break from business as usual in response to COVID-19, the natural world was given a period of rest and recovery all its own —  giving us the opportunity to witness the planet’s healing in action, all across the globe. Cleaner air, fresher water, recovering ecosystems and plant and animal populations, and so forth. It seems inevitable, however, that this all-too-short interlude is slated for an abrupt end with humanity’s return to the status quo, undoing any small gains that may have been made. Is it not, then, necessary for us to take this moment to reflect on the consequences of these actions we are so eager to take back up, and do what we can to “curb” their negative effects on the earth’s environment? 

The word “curb,” as a verb, means “to restrain, or keep in check.” CURB., the exhibition, brings together works that stand as warnings of the negative impact our actions can have on the natural world, with those that celebrate the beauty of that same natural world and the lives lived within it — providing an opportunity to reflect anew on what we must protect, and, indeed, what we must limit, in order to do so. 

In this exhibition, artists Jaeyoung Shin (New Media Installation), Sookyun Yang (Point Cloud Visualization), Seoyoung Je (Painting), Carline Reize (Audio-Visual), and IVAAIU City (New Media Installation) approach the most pressing environmental issues of our day through their chosen medium. Their explorations of the challenges we face and our strategies for facing them, now and in the future, are both figurative and abstract in form. 

In undertaking this exhibition, The Untitled Void posits that the freedom of expression afforded by fine art allows for an exploration of these vital and wide-ranging topics as they truly are, without compromise. TUV believes, too, that this approach allows for the full spectrum of human experience in engaging such issues, from cold to warm, intellectual to emotional. With CURB., we hope to provide an occasion for introspection and reflection about the responsibilities before us, as we position ourselves for our long-awaited return to everyday life.

The Untitled Void에서는 2022년 2월 3일부터 2월 17일까지 《CURB.》를 개최한다. 신재영, 양숙현, 제서영, Caroline Reize, IVAAIU City가 참여하는 이번 전시는 새로운 한 해가 시작되는 시점에서 자연환경과 그 안에서 살아가는 우리를 돌아보는 전시이다. 팬데믹이 끝날 거라는 희망적 시각들이 제시되고 있는 현재, 우리는 다시 본격적인 활동들을 준비하고 있다. 인류가 팬데믹 기간 동안 잠시 멈춤의 시간을 가진 동안 지구의 자연환경은 휴식과 회복의 시간을 가지게 되었고, 전 세계 곳곳에서 자연환경이 회복되는 증거들을 목격할 수 있었다. 하지만 이제 잠시의 휴식기간을 가졌던 자연환경은 인류의 복귀와 함께 과거의 고통을 겪을 것으로 우려된다. 현시점에서 우리가 다시 시작하게 될 행위들이 지구의 자연환경에 미치는 영향을 생각해보고 만약에 발생될 문제가 있다면 이를 줄이려는(Curb) 노력을 해야 되지 않을까? 전시 타이틀인 ‘Curb’는 동사로 ‘좋지 못한 것을 제한하다’는 의미이다. 우리의 행위가 자연 환경에 미치는 부정적 영향들에 대한 경고를 담고 있는 작품들과 함께 자연 환경과 그 안에서의 우리의 삶의 아름다운 모습들을 담은 작품들을 하나의 전시에 담아내어서 우리가 지켜야 할 것들을 위해 제한해야 하는 것들에 대해 다시 한번 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회를 마련하고자 한다.

이번 전시는 아티스트 신재영(New Media Installation), 양숙현(Point Cloud Visualization), 제서영(Painting), Carline Reize(Audio-Visual), IVAAIU City(New Media Installation)가 지구의 환경적 주제를 가지고 저마다의 예술장르를 통해 표현하고 이를 작업으로 담아낸다.

신재영은 인류의 선택에 따라 변화할 수 있는 다양한 미래의 환경적 가능성들을 시각화한 뉴미디어 작업을 선보인다.
양숙현은 통영의 자연환경의 모습을 Point Cloud 시스템을 통해 표현한 Visualization 작업을 선보이는데, 자연 날 것 그대로의 모습을 관객으로 하여금 새로운 관점에서 경험하도록 제시한다.
제서영은 아름다운 자연의 모습과 그 안에서의 삶의 단편들을 엄선된 색을 통해, 추상과 상상의 혼합적인 이미지를 균형 있게 표현해낸 회화 작업을 보여준다.
Caroline Reize는 새로운 경제 생태계라는 큰 이슈가 되고 있는 NFT의 이면을 다루는 영상 작업 ‘New World?’을 출품한다. NFT 거래 플랫폼 OpenSea의 데이터를 사용하여 NFT의 환경 문제를 파도의 형태로 표현하는데, 이는 블록체인 기술의 영향력을 표현하는 동시에 바닷가에 쌓여 있는 플라스틱 쓰레기를 연상시킨다. 그녀의 작품은 보는 이들에게 NFT의 필요성과 미래에 대한 고민의 여지를 던져준다.
IVAAIU City는 네 가지의 작품을 선보인다. 동해안의 해수면 상승에 따른 해안 침식에 대한 Data Visualization 작업, 미국 캘리포니아의 기온 상승에 따른 산불 패턴 Data Visualization 및 산불로 인해 발생되는 기후 난민을 위한 대안적 모듈 작업, 히말라야 산맥의 해빙과 일본 스루가 만(灣)의 해수면 상승을 연계한 Conceptual Visualization 작업, 그리고 미래의 태양으로 인한 우주 기상 변화 관측을 주제로 한 인터랙티브 인스톨레이션 작업이다. 현재와 미래의 자연환경에서 이루어지는 혹은 이루어질 환경적 변화와 이에 대한 우리의 접근 방법에 대해 추상적 표현과 구상적 표현을 동시에 한다.

본 주제를 The Untitled Void에서 다루고자 함은 예술이라는 표현의 자유가 보장된 영역을 통하여 다양한 환경적 주제들을 가감 없이 나타내기 위해서이다. 또한, 예술이 가지고 있는 넓은 표현의 스펙트럼을 통하여 자연의 아름다운 모습과 훼손되어 가는 과정을 따뜻하거나 차가운 온도를 오가며 표현하고자 한다.《CURB.》에서의 경험이, 팬데믹 이후에 일상으로 돌아가게 될 우리에게 주어질 과제에 대해 스스로 다시 생각해 볼 이야기들을 남기길 기대한다.
