디 언타이틀드 보이드에서는 각자의 특질이 명백한 세 명의 작가 Abe Odedina, Ruben Benjamin, 최우영의 'Do That Thing'을 2023년 1월 6일부터 3월 5일까지 디 언타이틀드 보이드와 디 언타이틀드 카페에서 선보인다. 각 작가는 견해를 깊이 하여 작품으로 거침없이 표현하는데 집중한다. 전시는 개성 넘치는 그들의 작업이 이루는 유쾌한 화음을 통해 전경을 조흥하고자 한다. 관람객은 각자 느낌에 따라 혹은 그 이상을 작품을 통해 자유롭게 즐기며 상상을 끄집어 내길 바란다. Abe Odedina(b.1960, 나이지리아)의 작업은 장식적인 색채와 독창적인 오브제로 가득하다. 작가는 캔버스가 아닌 보드를 선택하여 작품 속 이미지와 강렬한 색감뿐 아니라 벽화가 주는 견고함을 구현한다. 이러한 방식으로 작가는 나타내고자 하는 바와 그 효과를 최대치로 끌어올린다. 그는 또한, 스스로를 민속예술가라 칭하는 데서 볼 수 있듯이, 아프리카 문화 예술에서 깊은 영감을 받았다. 아프리카의 문화 예술 양식을 다양하고 활발한 방식으로 해체하고 재해석하는 그의 작품에는 과거 예술사적 요소와 동시대적 예술 요소가 공존하며 조화를 이룬다. 작가는 이를 자기만의 색으로 창조한다. Ruben Benjamin(b.1994, 독일)은 조각과 그림의 경계를 넘나드는 작업을 한다. 그는 특히 자연에서 받는 강렬한 느낌에 시선과 생각을 응집하여 작품에 구현한다. 부드러우면서도 단단함이 느껴지는 질감과 과감한 컬러의 중첩으로 이루어진 그의 작품은 위치에 따른 빛의 차이를 달리 받아들여 마치 숨 쉬는 것같은 생동감을 드러낸다. 기계공학을 전공한 그의 이력은 작품의 기술적 완성도에서 묻어난다. 여기에 예술적인 감각이 더해져 모던한 연작을 만들어 낸다.최우영(b.1993, 한국)은 ‘나’라는 한 개인의 뿌리에서 뻗어 나오는 생각이 타인과의 관계 속에서 존재할 수밖에 없는 것에 대하여 심도 있게 고민한다. 작가는 이러한 생각을 얼굴 없는‘검은 점’으로 표현하고 있다. ‘검은 점’으로 표현된 인물은 작가의 생각과 현대사회 속 많은 이들을 대변한다. 결집되어 군중을 이루며 서로 얽히는 관계에서 발생하는 안정감과 동시에 관계 속에서 필연적으로 발생하는 고독을 담고 있는 것이다. 현시대를 살아가는 이들이라면 누구나 한번쯤 겪었을 법한 이러한‘검은 점’의 이중성에 공감하리라. 그의 작품은 개인과 군중 모든 것에 교집합적으로 닿아 있다. ‘검은 점’의 몸짓은 낯설게 다가오며 위로를 건네준다.The Untitled Void opens the new year with Do That Thing (January 6th - March 5th 2023), a showcase of works by three artists much celebrated for their singularity as painters: Abe Odedina, Ruben Benjamin, and Woo Young Choi. Spanning the TUV gallery space and the TUV cafe, these works share a boldness and depth of focus in their expression of each artists’ views — and indeed, the exhibition as a whole constitutes a uniquely harmonious vista in this intersection of distinct visions and approaches. Visitors are encouraged to let their feelings roam and follow in their wake, enjoying the freedom and hopefully finding their way into the farther reaches of their own imaginations. The work of Abe Odedina(b.1960, Nigeria) is full of decorative colors and creative objects. With the bold images and the strong colors in the works, he paints on board rather than canvas to express the solidity — and practicality — of shop fronts or municipal murals. Odedina describes himself as a folk artist and his practice is inspired by the rich figurative and oral traditions of African art, infused with a trace of magic realism. His practice seeks to revive and deconstruct quintessential classical themes spanning from ancient Greek to Yoruba mythologies to create a charged dialogue between epochs, cultures, and peoples. He combines both historical and contemporary images to create his own language.Ruben Benjamin(b.1994, Germany) pushes the boundaries between sculpture and painting, refracting his vision and thought through the lens of the natural world and its patterns. His works, which have a vibrant luminosity achieved by arranging and combining colors in a three-dimensional, overlapping manner, sometimes appear as if they are actually breathing. Benjamin’s background in mechanical engineering and technical skills are reflected in his impressive execution and finishes, resulting in an artistic series that feels both modern and complete.Woo Young Choi(b.1993, Korea) works from a place of deep agony over the notion that ideas branching out from the root of the “I” must inevitably exist in the context of relationships with the other. Choi expresses this idea as a faceless “black dot,” a character that represents the artist’s thoughts — along with those of many others in modern society. Containing both the stability of belonging that comes from a uniting, intertwining crowd as well as the unavoidable sense of isolation that occurs in any relationship, the duality of the “black dot” is sure to strike a chord with anyone living in the present era.
