디 언타이틀드 보이드는 2023년 6월 23일부터 8월 13일까지 듀오전 «SOMEBODY»를 통해 Aistė Stancikaitė와 Katie Hector의 작품을 국내에 처음으로 소개한다. 두 작가는 누군가의 -지인, 타인 혹은 인간 그 이상의- 부분을 확대하여 화면을 가득 채운다. 이는 익숙함과 동시에 형태의 왜곡을 가져와 인물을 낯설게 하고 구상과 추상의 교차를 일으킨다. 더하여 지극히 선택된 색은 작품 전체를 지배하여 원형에서 더욱 멀어지는 현상을 겪게 하고 바라보는 이들에게 통상에서 벗어난 열린 해석을 가능하게끔 한다.

Aistė Stancikaitė(b.1988, 리투아니아)의 작품은 강렬한 첫인상에 의해 숭고미를 일으킨다. 생략하고 강조된 누군가의 한 부분은 매끈하고 완벽에 가까운 표면으로 표현되어 촉각적으로, 감각의 전이를 일으키며 붉은 톤의 색이 그 존재를 더욱 부각시키는 역할을 해낸다. 최근에는 더 깊은 간극적인 구도를 위해 검정에 닿아 있는 파랑, 보라 톤을 더하여 암시적인 분위기를 심화한다. 속도전을 내는 현대사회와 달리 시간을 들여 섬세하게 인물을 관찰하고 작업으로 옮기는 과정 안에서 작가는 그 인물과의 거리를 긴밀히 한다. 부분만을 보여주는 화면의 누군가를 결론짓는 것은 오롯이 보는 이들의 몫으로 남는다.

전통적인 매체가 아닌 주로 염색하고 표백하여 캔버스와 마주하는 Katie Hector(b.1992, 미국)는 그의 주변 인물을 포함한 타인을 초상화로 그려낸다. 장식적인 요소를 배제한 채 부분 확대된 인물은 누군가를 모델로 그려졌지만 그 정체성을 알아차리기는 모호하다. 마치 열카메라로 촬영한 듯한 컬러, 에어브러시로 그려진 뽀얀 윤곽선, 염색과 표백을 반복적으로 얹어낸 레이어의 구성은 작가의 사상과 의도가 내포되지만 완제된 인물은 본질을 드러내지 않기에 입체적인 해석을 가능케 한다.

본 전시«SOMEBODY»는 ‘누군가를, 인물을 그린다’라는 보편적인 주제를 두 작가만의 독특한 조형언어로 해석하고 표현해 내는 것에 주목한다. 실재와 실재하지 않은 듯한 작품 속 누군가를 각자의 관념으로 바라보며 두 작가의 콜라보가 만들어낸 전경을 통해 신기로운 분위기를 경험해 보는 시간이 되길 바란다.

The Untitled Void presents “SOMEBODY”, a dual exhibition of works by Aistė Stancikaitė and Katie Hector, shown in Korea for the first time, from June 23 to August 13, 2023. By filling the canvas with close-ups of different figures - an acquaintance, an other, or a being perhaps more than human, both artists create a sense of familiarity while also exploring a distortion of form, rendering the figures strange and marking an intersection between the figurative and the abstract. Carefully chosen color palettes also dominate these works, further distancing the images from the original figures and inviting the viewer into an open interpretation that deviates from the norm.

Aistė Stancikaitė’s (b.1988, Lithuania) body of work evokes the sublime from the very start with its powerful first impressions. Those parts which are omitted or emphasized in representing someone are here replaced with a smooth, near-perfect surface, creating a phenomenon of tactile and sensory transference, while the reddish hues serve to further emphasize their presence. The recent addition of blue and purple tones that edge up to blackness make for even richer, more interstitial compositions, deepening the suggestive mood. Unlike the modern world, so obsessed with speed, Stancikaitė takes time to observe each figure in detail, closing the distance between them in the process of her work. It is left up to the viewer to draw any individual conclusions about each partially depicted figure.

Working primarily with dyed and bleached canvas rather in place of traditional media, Katie Hector (b.1992, USA) creates portraits of others, including the people around her. Despite being modeled on real people, however, the identity of the enlarged, partially depicted figures, stripped of any decorative elements, remain ambiguous. The colors that look like they were taken with a thermal camera, the airbrushed outlines, and the layered composition of repeated dyeing and bleaching gesture toward Hector’s thoughts and intentions, but the finished pieces do not reveal their essence, allowing for a three-dimensional interpretation.

As an exhibition, ”SOMEBODY" focuses on how these two artists interpret and express the universal theme of "capturing someone, capturing a figure," each in their own unique formative tongue. Viewers are invited to experience the mysterious atmosphere created by the juxtaposition of the two artists by encountering these people — real and unreal — from their own singular perspectives.
