Alessandro Keegan

Alessandro Keegan(b.1980, USA) is a visual artist, writer and art history professor with an MFA in painting and drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a MA in art history from Brooklyn College. Keegan is currently based in New York. His works have been exhibited in New York, Chicago, London, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Macau, The Hague, and many other cities worldwide. Writings about his work have appeared in Artsy, ArtMaze Magazine, Artforum, Cultured Magazine, Elephant Magazine, Masthead Magazine, Helvete, J’ai Froid and the 2023 book “New Surrealism: The Uncanny in Contemporary Painting” published by Phaidon International. Having been employed at the Gemological Institute of America in the past, the artist examined gemstones through a microscope in the dark while researching. He sublimated the fantasy and ideals the artists had deeply immersed into work that contained beauty and horror. The artist starts his work with a layer of chaos, including coffee, wine, and ink stains. He then delicately and firmly paints objects from fantasy, such as crystal eyes, the shape of plants, and the soft shapes of geometries. His artistic language, “Non-Objective Surrealism,” moves between informal representation and pictorial abstraction.
